Jersey Devil - Tillie's Hodge Podge

(update 10.26.2006)

Embaressingly enough, it's been a month since my last post! Ack. Hopefully some of you out there are still stopping by. This is the second Jersey Devil-Tillie painting installment. For this one, I went with a black devil, since he is usually, by definition, the absence of everything good/light. The highlights on his skin are a forest green. I'm describing that because these photos of the painting are really, really weak. I used a nice gloss medium over the devil - makes him look thick and oily in person but it creates a terrible glare when trying to photograph it. In the details you'll see an orange glow on his face and body but that's not painted there - it's from the sunrise outside while I was photographing. I'll try to get more professional shots of it but for now just the angle shot of the whole piece was glare-free. Thanks for looking!

That's all for now. For those of you familiar with my Mojizu stuff - the ghostie worms are in this painting! Sans-ghosties and sans-eyeballs. Go figure :)

(update 9.26.2006)

I've started the painting for the first Jersey Devil sketch. It's about
20 X 20 acrylic on wood. I don't feel that it's finished but I defintely need to give my eyes a break from it. Instead I'll burden yours :)
(is it me or is the one of the worst quality photos ever? good thing i don't want to be a photographer when i grow up....)

(previous post)

So there's a debate about whether the weird vaudevillian grinning face and parted hair belong to Asbury Park, NJ or Coney Island, Brooklyn. I'm not really trying to say one way or the other. All I know is a while back I got commissioned to do a Jersey themed painting. They wanted to include the Jersey Devil and Tillie's face. So I got to it - I've never completed a painting for this but I hope to. I might try to submit to the bunnycutlet animator show who knows. I got kind of obsessed with the face as a mask so I sort of threw it on everybody, kids and devils alike. I also threw in pine trees and cones in some of the backgrounds. Most folks from Jersey and Pennsylvania and most people that have driven' the straight away to visit the Jersey shore are familiar with the Pine Barrens and the creepiest trees ever protected by the EPA - scrubby pines. Anyway I thought I'd post these sketches and hopefully someday the paintings.

Some random critters and Slugponies :)

I've been doodling these a lot during my boring daytime meetings so I though maybe I should post a few. Not sure where I'm going with these if anywhere but I'm considering doing some paintings of them and posting them to Mojizu. It's been ages since I've posted anything new there - for shame!

The Water Towers

I only have two of these so far and unfortunately I lost my mind for second and decided to watercolor all over one of my drawings. I believe I sufficiently destroyed the poor thing. I'm posting them both anyway. I like the concept. A friend went on a beach vacation down south and saw tons of water towers and they reminded him of my work. He sent me a bunch of photographs and I was inspired. I hope to get back to these more intently sometime soon.

The ghosties obssession...

I'm sure it's noticeable that these little creepy ghosties have begun to take over my work. It started a little over a year ago. I won't get into to much mooshy gooshy personal detail but I was having break-up talk with someone and I kept talking about being haunted and how I felt that even little inanimate objects and items and street corners can seem haunted. Well since it's just snowballed and they are everywhere. They might be swirling in your wine glass, escaping from a cheeseburger, and so one. I found some older sketches of them and they certainly have changed over time. There are elements about the older sketches that I’m hoping to reassess and maybe reintroduce into the ghosties design. Some of which are more variations on expressions, teeth, and arms.

Tee designs - color

Just started fooling with coloring in some of these badboys from the previous post. I'm not commited to any of them and am certainly open to feedback. I still have to get to the Ghostie Voodoo and the Ghostie burger :) Until I've narrowed it down to a smaller number of choices, I'm posting this flash click through for now and i'll update it soon....

Tee Shirt Designs

(posted 8/29/06 - This one's for Dagan's post.....I <3 My Blazers.....)

So these are the rough sketches and vectors for some Ghostie tee shirt designs i've been toying with. They were originally for the Mojizu T-shirt contest but I sorta missed that deadline, now I'm thinking of submitting them to www.Threadless.com or maybe making a few for the next comic expo I do...we will see....

Remeber these are ROUGHS! I'll post the finished full color ones as I finish them :)

This first image is a scan of my teenee tinee sketches I did while riding the train back to Brooklyn. They are on the back of an email printout from GimmeShelter (I think you can kinda see through it)

These next few are my outlines in vector. Next steps, line quality and COLOR!

This is the Ghostie Boa - he's none to happy about it but he'll look fabulous with pumps or dunks.

This one incorporates the VooDoo Plushies I make. His little Ghostie soul has escaped through poor stitching. Not saying much for me since I hand sew the dolls - damn.

Uhm...My niece loves to blow bubbles. My dog likes to eat them. Poor dead bubbles.

This is the Ghostie Dead Meat shirt.
Mmmm...cheesburgers.........

Mojizu/Pictoplasma

I've entered a few character design paintings into www.mojizu.com (a really fun character design site and forum) and Pictoplasma (a publication and traveling artshow advocate for the relevance of character design in today's art world).

I'm posting a few of them below just to get things started with this blog. I'll post more as they are born....
